Into the Future Without Reservations

by Joel Pomerantz

January 3rd, 2012

As of this new year, I’m using a new system for Thinkwalks tours. Reservations are no longer necessary.

The empty pedestal that sits atop Mount Olympus (near 17th & Clayton) held a statue called the Triumph of Light by Belgian sculptor Antione Wiertz. It was sometimes called the Statue of Liberty because it was erected the year after the one in New York Harbor and also has a figure holding a torch aloft. After more than 60 years, it was removed for repairs in the 1950s and then somehow got lost.

After experimenting with various ways of tracking reservations, it seemed silly. I don’t require—or encourage—advance payment, so I may as well not require you, the commitment-averse people of San Francisco, to commit.

Just show up! My new calendar system shows a Google map when you click on the individual tour, so you’ll see the starting spot.

If you have questions, I’m always available by phone or email, or through the comment forms below each website post. (Personal replies won’t be visible to the public.)

I’ve boosted the frequency of tours on the January and February tour schedule, compared to past schedules. I hope that makes it easier to find a day that works for you to attend the tour you most want.

Starting in February, I’ll again be offering custom group tours at your request for your pals, co-workers or classmates.

You can even subscribe to tour announcements using your favorite calendar: iCal, Google Calendar, Outlook, etc. So take a look at the schedule and add some local nerdy explorations into your calendar!

See you soon!
