This Thinkwalks Urban Creek Exploration willbe a relaxed but very hilly hike, conversation-filled walk through streets and muddy paths, up and down cliffs and through half-charted dead-end streets with amazing views.
Includes:
- 3 hour free hike on trails, streets & stairways (4.5 miles)
- Snack stop (buy food at Canyon Market near the stop or bring food to share)
- One creek, many springs and surprising sidewalk seeps
- Lots of little info tidbits about places along the way
- Passing the hat for the hike leader
Meet at Douglass Playground at 26th & Douglass Streets. This walk will have one side trip that is very muddy, which you can join or wait-out for a few minutes. We’ll visit Islais Creek in Glen Canyon, seep that arre tributaries to it and nearby springs. Islais, or, rather, this tributary of the Islais creek system, is one of the better known of the creeks running above ground in San Francisco. We’ll also visit historic pond locations. The walk will be very hilly in places and three to three and a half hours. Dress in layers.
This will be more like a hike than the usual shorter Thinkwalks. Hike leader Joel Pomerantz has made a splash with his research and presentations about SF’s springs and waterways, present and past. He was involved in opening up the mystery of Lake Dolores to historical scrutiny, rewriting SF’s water story. He knows lots of secret passageways, too, and this walk will explore those, along with the canyons of Islais Creek.
Come enjoy this small-group Thinkwalks exploration rain or shine. Please RSVP and check last minute weather. Maximum 15 people. Bring snacks to share. Feel free to call if you have questions.
