Thinkwalks presents an exploration walk:
The Awkward Natural Birth of SF—EVENT IS FULL, please see bottom for other options.
Early San Francisco sprang from a spring. It was complicated.
The first decisions about where to create the outpost that became our city are mostly lost to pre-history. Recently some tantalizing clues have surfaced. A new understanding of Spanish journals has combined with better mapping of the landscape to create a picture of the natural setting. It was populated and stewarded by Indians for thousands of years before it convulsed through the 18th and 19th centuries into the city of today.
Topics: Dune hydrology, public art, expansion through regional water control, bedrock hill chopping, extreme weather, the politics of invasion, reading old maps and journals.
