Golden Gate Park history talk and slideshow
through the lens of transportation
Golden Gate park contains a lot of firsts. Strangely, one of those is it's standing as the first place in the world to regulate automobiles. That's right, and the firwst licenses, issued in 1900, were photo IDs with detailed descriptions so nobody could cheat. They even told "nose type" and what roads must be used to get into the Park.
These slides and tales give depth to the remaining hints of trains, ferris wheels, hot air balloons, elephants, race cars, and other transportation in the park, including, of course, the standards: bicycles and horse and buggy. What role did the Park play in the social life of San Franciscans? It's easy to find out by looking at the way each type of mobility was treated.
