Water Talk
Slides—slippery wet ones, with Q&A
Why do you sometimes see water cascading to the tracks in the Powell BART station? What was life like in San Francisco before Europeans arrived? Can I dig a well in my yard?
These and so many other questions can be answered by edxploring the water history of this water-poor town. But it's not as dry as you might think. San Francisco was located here largely because of water, and grew to be a regional power because of water.
Come see slides of defunct reservoirs you never knew existed—right beside Market Street. Come hear about the big controversies of San Francisco history: Was there really a fresh water lake beside Dolores Park? Did Hayes Creek ever flow on the surface? After this event, you'll understand how complicated it is to explore the history of something that has been buried under pavement, earthquake rubble and myth.
